Condition of the Week
Scoliosis
The origin of the word “scoliosis” comes from the Greek language meaning “crooked”. It is defined as an “abnormal lateral curvature of the spine”. When we look at a normal spine from the side, we should see three “typical” curves. The neck should curve to the front, the upper back should curve toward the back and the low back should curve front again.
When we look at the spine from the front or the back, we should not see any curves.
85-90% of scoliosis have no known cause.
10-15% of scoliosis can be cause by pathologies (tumors, fractures, or congenital malformations).
In scoliosis screenings, if scoliosis is noted and the patient bends forward at the waist and the curve does not improve it is considered a “congenital scoliosis”.
Can a congenital scoliosis be helped?
Chiropractic care will never change the misshapen bones which is the leading cause of these types of scoliosis. But corrective chiropractic care can restore the unaffected joints to their optimal function, thus limiting future degenerative compensations from starting.
Functional scoliosis has been shown to respond very well here at our office. We have many comparative film studies to verify this. Patients with curve greater than 34 degrees have shown a 50% improvement in less than 2.5 months in some cases! Consistent home exercise as well as good posture are critical to care. Scoliosis is more common with females, but can occur in males. It often worsens during rapid growth periods substantially. Close monitoring is a must!
Chiropractic IS safe and CAN help patients with scoliosis. We offer NO CHARGE consultations and scoliosis screenings! Before permanent options like spinal surgery see a chiropractor first! Your quality of life may depend on it!
Condition of the Month: Backpack Safety
Parents remember that the weight limit of backpacks is 10 -15 % of a child’s weight.
45 lbs. child = < 6.75 lbs. max. weight!
60 lbs. child = < 9.0 lbs. max. weight!
72 lbs. child = < 10.8 lbs. max. weight!
Think they are carrying more than this? You bet they are. When we allow them to carry packs heavier than this, we risk long term damage to our children’s spine, including degenerative changes occurring 10-20 years faster than the normal population. This is due to the compressive forces on the still growing pediatric skeleton including all important growth plates.
If more of us start complaining when our children bring home packs full of heavy books, we may get a change in the way schools delegate study hall work and homework. These children should not be bringing packs home full of heavy textbooks.
Backpack Tips:
ü Choose the correct backpack for your body size
ü Don’t overload your backpack
ü Lift using your legs when testing the weight of your backpack
ü Wear your backpack using both shoulder straps
Hey Mom and Dad…
Each year kids are required to have a physical exam before entering the educations system, but what about their spinal health? Isn’t it important to check the most essential parts of their entire little bodies?! Call 715-675-4106 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Baker. Bring along your child’s backpack and have it checked for proper fit and weight limit for their body frame.
At Baker Borski Chiropractic we want your children to be at their optimal level of health. A body free from subluxations can show higher levels of concentration, creativity, clearer thinking and better listening skills. With all this in mind, maybe report card day won’t be as stressful this year after all!

Yale Study, Chiropractic Care Is Today Contributing Toward A 50 Percent Reduction In Opioid Prescriptions Issued In The United States
According to a recent study carried out by the Yale School of Medicine at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, chiropractic care is today contributing toward an almost 50 percent reduction in opioid prescriptions issued in the United States. A highly experienced chiropractor based in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, Dr. Scott P. Zack takes a closer look at the news.
“...patients who have visited a chiropractor for musculoskeletal pain and associated conditions are currently 49 percent less likely to be issued and to receive an opioid prescription," explains Dr. Zack, "when compared to their counterparts who sought help from other healthcare providers.”
Clinical guidelines in the U.S. now recommend many non-pharmacological options, including chiropractic care, to be considered as so-called 'front line' treatments ahead of any medication, including opioids, according to Michigan-based chiropractor Dr. Zack. "What's more," he continues, "chiropractors, specifically, provide many of the treatments currently advised by clinical guidelines for the initial care of lower back and neck pain, as well as osteoarthritis of the hips, knees, and hands, which may otherwise be treated with opioid medication."
The findings of the Yale School of Medicine study were presented at the American Academy of Pain Medicine 2019 Annual Meeting. "Researchers selected a series of studies with a total of more than 60,000 patients to include in their analysis," explains Dr. Zack, "which was supported by the NCMIC Foundation, among several other organizations."
"Furthermore," he continues, "late last year, U.S. Congress also passed new opioid legislation directing the Department of Health and Human Services to review its payment policies."
"This was done so that doctors are no longer encouraged to prescribe opioids over more conservative options, such as chiropractic care," Dr. Zack adds, wrapping up, "which it's hoped will further drive down the prescription of opioid medications throughout the United States over coming months and years."
... Chiropractic manipulation is today widely utilized in the treatment of lower back and sciatic nerve pain, headaches, extremity conditions, whiplash, and other neck pain, among various other common health complaints.
Congratulations Lincoln and Anna on their new addition, Maisie Ray!
